Action Site: The Art, Science and Practice of Wetland Restoration in Europe

Group exhibition

11.11–25.11.2027: WaterLANDS, Fondazione Marchesani, Venice, IT

Action Site is the experimental space where a selection of observations and reflections by the artists who took part in the WaterLANDS project are presented – a constellation of interventions that transcends the temporal limits of the European project to respond to the broader and more far-reaching needs of environmental dynamics.

As part of the WaterLANDS project, artists, experts from diverse backgrounds, organizations, and other human and non-human actors have collaborated at six action sites in Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK.  WaterLANDS aims to show that wetlands in Europe, even those compromised by human activity, can still provide significant value to society once regenerated at scale.

Claudio Beorchia has focused his research on the Venice Lagoon (Italy), collaborating with We are here Venice ETS; Marjolijn Dijkman has been working on the Ems-Dollard estuary (Netherlands), in partnership with the Province of Groningen and Wageningen University; Christine Mackey has focused on the Cuilcagh-Anierin Uplands (Ireland), in collaboration with LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature and University College Dublin; Feral Practice and Laura Harrington collaboratively concentrated on upland blanket peatlands  in the Great North Bog area, predominantly in Yorkshire (UK), in dialogue with the University of Leeds; Elo Liiv worked on the Pärnu river basin (Estonia), in collaboration with the University of Tartu, the Estonian Fund for Nature and Tootsi Turvas; finally, Maria Nalbantova drew inspiration from the Dragoman marsh (Bulgaria), in collaboration with the Balkani Wildlife Society and WWF Bulgaria.
